Thought I was having issues with my clutch hub not engaging (more issues elsewhere unfortunately). Put the new hub on and it didn't want to bite. Some spinning, some biting, but I'm not fighting with it. Old hub is working well and not the root of my cause. But seriously though, why is it painted?!

Corrosion resistance?

I’ve received brake rotors like that. Rotor was fine, but the e-brake drum-in-hat was painted.

Needless to say it didn’t work well

Friction resistance.

the factory one was painted at first too. just wore off with age. if the new one isn’t engaging reliably, I’d wonder if its stiffer than it should be or the metal it’s made from is different.

Its just sliding the paint against the old material. If the old one becomes a problem I'll wire wheel the replacement to bare metal. Or just get a whole new compressor , clutch and all. They're <$200 anyways.

the other mating surface part needs replacing you have to have two flat surfaces

The clearance needs to be set properly and a/c clutches have a bed in period

Clearance was in spec .020. But the sound and watching the spinning was pretty alarming.
